SISTER MARY JOSEPHINE MAES, OLVM, 91, died on Friday, March 5, 2021, at Saint Anne Community at Victory Noll, Huntington, Indiana.
Sister Mary Josephine was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on July 20, 1929, to Juan Maes and Guadalupita Anaya Maes. She was the third of 12 children. Two brothers, Eloy and Gilbert and six sisters, Susie Maes, Dora Rodriguez, Irene Dowrey, Caroline Maes, Isabel Trujillo and Manuelita Vigil, all precede her in death. One brother Michael Maes, and two sisters, Connie Howley and Marie Roybal, all of Santa Fe, New Mexico, survive sister. Many nieces and nephews also survive Sister Mary Jo, as well as her Victory Noll sisters with whom she shared life and community for 70 years.
Sister Mary Josephine entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters on September 6, 1950, and made first vows on August 5, 1953. Her ministry was religious education in parishes in the states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. Sister retired to Victory Noll in 2007, to do volunteer ministry and fully retired 2010, to a ministry of prayer and presence.
