The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas has come to be known, simply, as "The Holidays". Everyone has their own hopes and dreams for "The Holidays". One dream held in common is the end of the "The War". People are sharply divided as to how to do this: begin to bring our troops home or send in more.
One man holds a solution, but obviously it is always overlooked. "Do good to those who hate you, pray for those who persecute and calumniate you". Many of us have become so familiar with this formula, we read on, dismissing it as impractical and impossible in our present situation.
There is one group beginning to gather to pray, discuss and help each other to take Jesus' words seriously - they find this missing in their own "traditional" churches. They are beginning to be known as "the emerging church". For the most part, they are young. They are actively looking for experienced, like-minded people as "mentors and guides along the way". Recently, 1000 people convened in Albuquerque, NM at Fr. Richard Rohr's Center for Action and Contemplation.
If you aspire to be a mentor to these earnest young people, be ready to tell them how you respond to Jesus' word.
