Monthly Reflection
by Sister Martha Wordeman

August 2009

A friend of ours became a very enthusiastic Catholic and often attended Mass, even during the week. When August 15th arrived and her daughter was preparing to go to Mass, her mother asked her why? “The daughter said it is the Assumption of Mary.” The mother responded “what did Mary assume?” Actually, Mary did not assume anything, but she was assumed: taken up body and soul into heaven.
There is nothing in the New Testament that affirms this. The idea grew out of the Church's life of prayer and biblical reflection. In the fifth century, the feast of the Assumption began to be developed out of the feast of Theotokos (Mother of God). In the seventh century, the term Assumption called attention to the manner of Mary's passing. She had been taken up fully body and soul into heaven.
I'm grateful for this feast. By it, God our creator places the ultimate stamp of approval on the feminine. It is our bodily form that is major in defining the gender of a person. A disproportionate number of women have suffered for merely being a woman. Current examples are: lower pay in the workforce, made slaves in the 20 billion dollar global business of sex trafficking and too often victims of brutal rape and death.
May Mary, triumphant in her life and her assumption into heaven, inspire us to respect and treat all women and men as God's beloved creation.

Congar Institute
for Ministry Development

We want to minister to the culturally diverse Catholic population of this country, proclaiming Jesus Christ through evangelization, education and/or Christian formation. We would like to offer a solid Catholic teaching and ministries that speak to the needs of the faith communities, empowering the Laity, dedicating our prayer and ministry to the proclamation of God's Kingdom.
That is why we have become part of a network of religious communities collaborating to assist home mission dioceses in their efforts to develop lay leadership and ministry. This is an initiative of the Home Missions Leadership Conference and the Congar Institute for Ministry Development.
