Monthly Reflection
by Sister Martha Wordeman

May 2009

"April showers bring May flowers." The showers of April this year were tears at Holy Week and the remembrance of Jesus suffering and death, a result of sin and greed. Also, there were tears for those who suffered from an erosion of the global economy; those who lost their homes and lost their jobs. There were tears for those who suffered in war, earthquakes and severe storms.

Yet, flowers began to appear three days after the death of Jesus. We began to celebrate the Easter Vigil singing the Exultet: "Rejoice, 0 Earth, let glory fill you!"

Now, in May, we celebrate these flowers and acknowledge Mary's part in the brightening light of the Resurrection of the Son of God. It was Mary's "Yes" to the angel who announced God's invitation that she be the mother of Jesus. Shortly after her consent, she visited her cousin Elizabeth and declared the prophetic truth that "God has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly, He has filled the hungry with good things and has sent the rich away empty".

Mary guided the child Jesus through very difficult growing years in which He began to learn the cruelty of men in power and his response in faithfulness to God, His father. She supported Jesus and followed him to his death. Each of us are called to imitate her.

Let us pray, in the lyrics of a song by Sister Mary Ellen Descourouez, OLVM: "You are what we are all called to be, 0 Holy Mary (from Tu Eres La Victoria).

(Lucas 1 :52-53).
