Monthly Reflection
by Sister Martha Wordeman

March 2009

“Repent and believe the Good News.” This invitation, if heeded, will leave a spiritual “mark” on our lives, just as the cross of ashes leaves Christ's mark on our forehead on Ash Wednesday. “Repent” means “turning away” from the erroneous path onto which we have strayed. It means finding the right path again. “Believing the Good News of the Gospel” is the surest way to do that.
Earnest, prayerful reading of the New Testament is a productive Lenten practice.
In the forty days of Lent, we follow Jesus into the desert for deep, enriching prayer. In our reading we see into the soul. We meet the Man who is one with God, his Father. We see the Man ready to do God's will in all things; always the gentle man in relating to God's children; the poor, the sick, the “sinners” and the outcasts.
Today's “outcasts” are the immigrants. Those driven from their homeland by poverty and civil unrest and, in today's society, now driven from their second home by unjust laws established by another fear, of there not being enough of God's gifts for all to share. Yet this is exactly what God calls us — over and over — to do.
If we welcome these “outcasts” God will reward us with all that we, and they, need. It is said that the Native People who welcomed and cared for our European ancestors, who came as Immigrants to this land, had a belief that “If we share with others in need of the things we have, we will never be in want.” Give it a “try” as a Lenten resolution.
