Monthly Reflection
by Sister Martha Wordeman

February 2009

The month of February brings us Lent, "spring". Do you feel the fresh wind blowing? A harsh winter has taught us many hard lessons: that the unscrupulous can take our life savings and lose them for us, a misdirected war kills thousands of innocent people, destroys their homes and places of worship. Devastating hurricanes, forest fires and blizzards can touch any of us. But God is granting us a fresh start this Lent.
We are called to join Jesus in his forty day, Spirit guided retreat in the barren desert, preparing for his "inaugural address" to be given in his hometown of Nazareth in Galilee.

We read in Luke 4:14,16,18:
"Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee. When he came to Nazareth, he went to the Synagogue and stood to read: 'the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and to let the oppressed go free.'''

We are called to take our place beside Jesus caring for today's poor, the captives and the oppressed. Due to wars and worldwide depression, there is an unprecedented migration of people, driven out of their homes and homeland. We have a unique call, as Jesus's followers to assist where and how we can help.
Until now, our .Statue of Liberty was a welcome sign to immigrants longing for a home in America. Today, because of fear of foreigners there are miles of electrically charged fences with the threat of imprisonment to keep the homeless out.
We have our "Lenten resolution of 2009" laid out for us in Jesus's own words: He and we have the Spirit upon us to bring good news to the poor, release to the captives and strive for freedom of the oppressed.
