Monthly Reflection
by Sister Martha Wordeman

January 2010

    Memories of happy Christmas gatherings, enthusiastic children and food gathered for the poor are still lingering in our hearts.
    Someone has described the Christmas Season as the time in which we get "tricked" into doing kind things for others. Upon reflection, I remembered the many beautiful things people did at personal sacrifice and cost, even to repairing broken friendships. Let us not forget that all this was a result of Jesus becoming one of us.
    There is a little Christmas carol by John Bell called "God's Surprise" that is well worth quoting.

God's Surprise

Who would think that what was needed
To transform and save the earth
Might not be a plan or army,
Proud in purpose, proved in worth?
Who would think, despite derision,
that a child should lead the way?
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.

Shepherds watch and wise men wonder,
Monarchs scorn and angels sing;
such a place as none would reckon
Hosts a holy helpless thing;
Stable beasts and bypassed strangers.
Watch a baby laid in hay:
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.

Centuries of skill and science
Span the past from which we move,
Yet experience questions whether,
With such progress, we improve.
While the human lot we ponder,
Lest our hopes and humor fray,
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.

Pastores velan y hombres sabios maravillan,
Monarcas desprecian y ángeles canta
Tal sitio, cual nadie pensaría,
Da hospicio a quien es sagrado e indefenso;

Congar Institute
for Ministry Development

   We want to minister to the culturally diverse Catholic population of this country, proclaiming Jesus Christ through evangelization, education and/or Christian formation. We would like to offer a solid Catholic teaching and ministries that speak to the needs of the faith communities, empowering the Laity, dedicating our prayer and ministry to the proclamation of God's Kingdom.
    That is why we have become part of a network of religious communities collaborating to assist home mission dioceses in their efforts to develop lay leadership and ministry. This is an initiative of the Home Missions Leadership Conference and the Congar Institute for Ministry Development.
