Sister Jeanette Halbach is a native of Primghar, Iowa. She has a Masters degree from the University of Notre Dame and has served in the mission fields in Massachusetts, Iowa and Colorado in religious education and in TV programming for children. She was mission coordinator in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada, director of the Justice and Peace Office in Denver, and director of the Julia Center in inner city Chicago, an educational and enrichment Center for immigrant women.
Sister Jeanette was re-elected for a second term as president, 2004-2008. She had previously served two terms as president, beginning in 1977. Sister’s view of leadership is that of servant: Leadership is a sacred responsibility and a privileged opportunity to serve my sisters, the church and society. There are many challenges in our church and in our war-weary world today. It is imperative that as women religious we work together with all people who believe in the sacredness of all creation and who share a hope for justice and peace in the world. I take the admonition of Scripture seriously, “This is what Yahweh asks of you, this and only this, to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
